Collection: Transmission

In 2015, the Amsterdam Museum presented Transmission, a >collaborative photographic project by Koos Breukel and Milette Raats. Three works from Raats’ series were acquired for the museum’s permanent collection.

The project documents the remarkable life and transition of Miepie, who embraced her identity as a woman later in life. More than a narrative of gender transition, Transmission is a contemplative study of how womanhood is experienced—particularly when that journey begins beyond the age of sixty.

Over the span of seven years, Raats worked in close dialogue with Miepie, capturing her evolving identity against the shifting urban landscape of Amsterdam. The resulting images  are both intimate and contemplative, offering a powerful meditation on transformation, visibility, and the resilience of the human spirit.
