Collection: Dutch Masters Revisited

The groundbreaking project Dutch Masters Revisited reimagines classic portraiture by placing prominent Dutch citizens in the roles of people of colour known—through historical research—to have lived in the Netherlands during the 17th and 18th centuries. Through this powerful visual intervention, the project challenges dominant narratives in Dutch art history and provokes dialogue around representation, visibility, and colonial legacy.

Upon its debut, the project sparked significant debate in the museum world, particularly following an article in The New York Times that drew international attention to its bold concept and execution.

Dutch Masters Revisited (photographed by Stacii Samadin, Milette Raats, Ahmet Polat and Humberto Tan) was first exhibited at H’Art Museum in Amsterdam and curated by Jorgen Tjon a Fong. The Amsterdam Museum later acquired the portraits for its permanent collection. In 2024, the project made its international debut at Photoville in New York City, further expanding its global impact and relevance.
